About Lucas Tonies

Lucas Tonies, MSN, FNP-C, CCRN, is a Nurse Practitioner providing primary and telemedicine care at NoMi Beach Health. He spent nearly two decades in critical care before moving into outpatient medicine, where he focuses on prevention, early intervention, and care plans built around each patient’s actual life.

He approaches visits differently than the typical rushed model. “Most people don’t need more information,” he says. “They need someone to actually listen, connect the dots, and build a plan that makes sense for their life. That’s what I try to do in every visit.”

That philosophy comes from years at the bedside, where he saw what happens when problems go unaddressed early. “I’ve taken care of patients who have been in the hospital long-term, and a lot of those situations started with things that could have been managed earlier. That’s why I moved into primary care. I want to help people stay out of the hospital, not just treat them once they’re already there.”

Before primary care, Lucas worked in perioperative and critical care at Kaiser Permanente, where he also chaired the organization-wide Research and Evidence-Based Practice committee. He continues as Chair Emeritus. His earlier work includes the cardiothoracic ICU and transplant unit at the University of Washington Medical Center, Stanford Medicine, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Mayo Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic.

During his Nurse Practitioner training, he worked in addiction medicine with the San Francisco Department of Public Health and street medicine teams, managing opioid and benzodiazepine withdrawal. That work shaped how he treats patients facing complex life circumstances — practical, direct, and without judgment.

He brings a personal understanding of weight loss and metabolic health. “A lot of patients come in feeling stuck. They’ve tried everything, and sometimes they feel judged. It’s not about willpower. It’s about having the right plan and the right support.”

“I’ve seen what happens when things get missed early,” he says. “It’s why I take the time to really understand what’s going on — not just treat symptoms and move on.”
