Hair Loss (Alopecia)

Hair loss affects millions and can result from genetic, hormonal, autoimmune, or nutritional causes. Treatment varies significantly based on the underlying type.

When to Book

Book a visit if a skin concern is new, spreading, painful, not improving with over-the-counter care, or changing in appearance.

Symptoms

Gradual thinning at the crown (androgenetic), diffuse shedding (telogen effluvium), smooth bald patches (alopecia areata), or scarring with permanent loss.

Causes & Risk Factors

Androgenetic alopecia is driven by genetics and DHT. Telogen effluvium follows stress or illness. Alopecia areata is autoimmune. Iron deficiency and thyroid disease are other causes.

How We Evaluate

Scalp examination, pull test, and dermoscopy. Labs include ferritin, TSH, vitamin D, and zinc. Scalp biopsy when pattern is unclear or scarring is suspected.

Treatment Options

Androgenetic alopecia: minoxidil and finasteride (men) or spironolactone (women). Alopecia areata: topical steroids or JAK inhibitors. Telogen effluvium resolves with cause correction. Our North Miami Beach team creates individualized plans.

When It Is Urgent

Seek prompt evaluation for sudden patchy loss, rapid progression, or hair loss with scalp pain and scarring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hair loss reversible?

Depends on the type. Telogen effluvium and alopecia areata are often reversible. Androgenetic alopecia is progressive but can be slowed with early treatment.

Does minoxidil really work?

Yes. Topical minoxidil is FDA-approved and proven to slow loss and promote regrowth. Results take three to six months and require continued use.

When should I worry about shedding?

Losing 50 to 100 hairs daily is normal. If shedding increases for over two to three months or you see visible thinning, an evaluation is appropriate.
