Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition producing thick, scaly plaques. It affects roughly 3% of U.S. adults and is associated with psoriatic arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

When to Book

Book a visit if a skin concern is new, spreading, painful, not improving with over-the-counter care, or changing in appearance.

Symptoms

Well-demarcated, raised, red plaques with silvery-white scale on elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. Nail pitting occurs in up to half of patients. Joint pain suggests psoriatic arthritis.

Causes & Risk Factors

Overactive T-cell–mediated immune response drives rapid keratinocyte proliferation. Triggers include strep throat, stress, smoking, obesity, and certain medications.

How We Evaluate

Diagnosis is usually clinical. Biopsy confirms uncertain cases. We calculate body surface area and screen for psoriatic arthritis, metabolic syndrome, and depression.

Treatment Options

Mild disease uses topical corticosteroids and vitamin D analogues. Moderate-to-severe psoriasis may require phototherapy, methotrexate, or biologics targeting TNF-alpha, IL-17, or IL-23. Our North Miami Beach providers develop step-up plans.

When It Is Urgent

Seek emergency care for erythrodermic psoriasis — widespread redness covering most of the body with fever or chills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is psoriasis contagious?

No. Psoriasis is autoimmune and cannot be spread through contact.

Can psoriasis affect my joints?

Up to 30% develop psoriatic arthritis. We screen for joint symptoms at every visit.

Are biologic medications safe long-term?

Biologics have over two decades of safety data. Risks include increased infection susceptibility, but benefits usually outweigh risks. We monitor labs regularly.
