Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition causing facial redness, visible blood vessels, and acne-like bumps. It most commonly affects fair-skinned adults over 30.

When to Book

Book a visit if a skin concern is new, spreading, painful, not improving with over-the-counter care, or changing in appearance.

Symptoms

Persistent central facial redness, flushing, visible small blood vessels, papules and pustules, and possible skin thickening on the nose. Eye dryness and burning may occur.

Causes & Risk Factors

Vascular instability, immune dysregulation, and Demodex mite overgrowth. Triggers include sun, heat, alcohol, spicy foods, and stress. Fair skin and family history increase susceptibility.

How We Evaluate

Diagnosis is clinical. We classify by subtype — erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, or ocular — to guide therapy. Biopsy is rarely needed.

Treatment Options

Trigger avoidance and daily sunscreen are foundational. Topical metronidazole, azelaic acid, or ivermectin reduce inflammation. Brimonidine gel temporarily reduces redness. Our North Miami Beach team tailors treatment to subtype.

When It Is Urgent

See a provider for eye pain, vision changes, or rapidly worsening facial swelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rosacea the same as acne?

No. Rosacea can produce bumps but lacks blackheads and whiteheads. Treatment differs — some acne products worsen rosacea.

Can rosacea be cured?

Rosacea is chronic but well controlled with consistent treatment and trigger avoidance.

Does laser treatment help rosacea?

Yes. Pulsed-dye laser and IPL effectively reduce persistent redness and visible blood vessels.
