Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is skin darkening at sites of previous inflammation or injury. It is especially common in darker skin tones and frequently follows acne or eczema.

When to Book

Book a visit if a skin concern is new, spreading, painful, not improving with over-the-counter care, or changing in appearance.

Symptoms

Flat, darkened macules at sites of healed inflammation. Color ranges from light brown to blue-gray depending on depth. PIH is not painful but can be slow to resolve.

Causes & Risk Factors

Any inflammatory process — acne, dermatitis, burns, insect bites — triggers excess melanin deposition. Darker skin phototypes are more susceptible. Picking lesions worsens PIH.

How We Evaluate

Diagnosis is clinical. Wood lamp determines depth. We identify and treat the underlying cause to prevent new PIH.

Treatment Options

Sunscreen is essential. Topical hydroquinone, retinoids, azelaic acid, and vitamin C accelerate fading. Chemical peels are considered for resistant cases. Our North Miami Beach providers treat the underlying condition concurrently.

When It Is Urgent

Not urgent. Persistent discoloration not matching a known event should be evaluated to rule out other pigmentary disorders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a dermatology provider?

No referral is required at Nomi Beach Health. You can book directly for any skin, hair, or nail concern.

What should I expect at my first dermatology visit?

We perform a focused skin examination, review your history, and discuss a treatment plan the same day. Bring a list of current medications and any photos of how the condition has changed.

How long does it take for skin treatments to work?

Timelines vary. Topical treatments for eczema or acne often improve in two to six weeks. Chronic conditions like psoriasis may need several months of consistent therapy.

Will my skin condition come back after treatment?

Many skin conditions are chronic and managed rather than cured. We create maintenance plans to minimize flare-ups and guide you on when to resume active treatment.

Do you accept insurance for dermatology visits?

Yes. We accept most major insurance plans. Contact our office to confirm your specific plan before scheduling.
