Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis causes scaly, flaky, red patches in oily areas — scalp, face, and chest. In infants it is known as cradle cap.
When to Book
Book a visit if a skin concern is new, spreading, painful, not improving with over-the-counter care, or changing in appearance.
Symptoms
Greasy yellowish or white flakes on the scalp, eyebrows, and nasolabial folds. Underlying skin is pink to red with mild itch. Flares are common in winter and during stress.
Causes & Risk Factors
Malassezia yeast overgrowth on sebum-rich skin triggers inflammation. Immunosuppression, neurological conditions, and stress worsen it. More common in men aged 30 to 60.
How We Evaluate
Diagnosis is clinical. We rule out psoriasis, tinea capitis, and contact dermatitis when atypical. Biopsy is rarely required.
Treatment Options
Medicated shampoos with ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione are first-line for the scalp. Topical antifungals and low-potency corticosteroids control facial flares. Our North Miami Beach team recommends maintenance regimens.
When It Is Urgent
Rarely urgent. See a provider if symptoms worsen suddenly or fail to respond to over-the-counter treatments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see a dermatology provider?
No referral is required at Nomi Beach Health. You can book directly for any skin, hair, or nail concern.
What should I expect at my first dermatology visit?
We perform a focused skin examination, review your history, and discuss a treatment plan the same day. Bring a list of current medications and any photos of how the condition has changed.
How long does it take for skin treatments to work?
Timelines vary. Topical treatments for eczema or acne often improve in two to six weeks. Chronic conditions like psoriasis may need several months of consistent therapy.
Will my skin condition come back after treatment?
Many skin conditions are chronic and managed rather than cured. We create maintenance plans to minimize flare-ups and guide you on when to resume active treatment.
Do you accept insurance for dermatology visits?
Yes. We accept most major insurance plans. Contact our office to confirm your specific plan before scheduling.
