Hives (Urticaria)

Hives are raised, itchy welts from histamine release. Acute hives resolve within six weeks; chronic urticaria persists beyond that and often has no identifiable trigger.

When to Book

Book a visit if a skin concern is new, spreading, painful, not improving with over-the-counter care, or changing in appearance.

Symptoms

Pink or red itchy welts that vary in size and migrate — individual lesions last less than 24 hours. Angioedema (deeper swelling of lips, eyelids, or throat) may accompany hives.

Causes & Risk Factors

Acute triggers include infections, medications, foods, or insect stings. Chronic urticaria is often autoimmune. Physical triggers include pressure, cold, heat, and exercise.

How We Evaluate

Acute hives rarely need workup. For chronic urticaria we check CBC, CRP, thyroid function, and autoimmune markers. Allergy testing is pursued when a trigger is suspected.

Treatment Options

Second-generation antihistamines at standard or higher doses are first-line. Omalizumab is FDA-approved for chronic urticaria unresponsive to antihistamines. Our North Miami Beach team builds a stepwise plan.

When It Is Urgent

Call 911 if hives are accompanied by throat tightness, tongue swelling, difficulty breathing, or dizziness — signs of anaphylaxis requiring epinephrine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a dermatology provider?

No referral is required at Nomi Beach Health. You can book directly for any skin, hair, or nail concern.

What should I expect at my first dermatology visit?

We perform a focused skin examination, review your history, and discuss a treatment plan the same day. Bring a list of current medications and any photos of how the condition has changed.

How long does it take for skin treatments to work?

Timelines vary. Topical treatments for eczema or acne often improve in two to six weeks. Chronic conditions like psoriasis may need several months of consistent therapy.

Will my skin condition come back after treatment?

Many skin conditions are chronic and managed rather than cured. We create maintenance plans to minimize flare-ups and guide you on when to resume active treatment.

Do you accept insurance for dermatology visits?

Yes. We accept most major insurance plans. Contact our office to confirm your specific plan before scheduling.
